Initial Awakening Experience

By Maureen O’Brien (Mountain View Dahn Center)

dahnjo1.JPG

I found the Initial Awakening workshop and the four Reinforcement sessions very helpful. The day-long format allowed us to go deeper into the practice than any series of hour-long classes could. The workshop opened with the usual round of Dahn Jon tapping.

The participants introduced themselves and explained why they were interested in Dahn practice.

The reasons ranged from ill health to peace of mind.

The introductions created a tangible atmosphere of safety and unity in the room.

I found myself less self conscious in exercising with a group of near-strangers after we had all confessed to the flaws we would like to correct.

The workshop leaders reviewed some of the basic principles behind Dahn Hak, focusing primarily on the principle of Su-Sueng-Hwa-Gang or Water Up, Fire Down.

I’d heard it before, but this time we were led through a series of exercises that allowed us to actually EXPERIENCE it. This was important for me.

I am frequently “in my head” and am subject to regular bouts of anxiety. The sustained exercise allowed me to move from my ever-vigilant head into my body.

I experienced a calm, less fearful mind and a stronger more vital body.

I actually EXPERIENCED a discernible increase in vitality:

After setting up the conditions for the Water Up, Fire Down condition to take place we did some Hang Gong postures that in ordinary hectic-mind circumstances I would NOT have been able to sustain.

I was able to do them quite easily.

More importantly, the Reinforcement sessions allowed us to APPLY what we had learned at the workshop. We energized our bodies while quieting and focusing our minds.

Each session had us experience Water Up, Fire Down under different circumstances.

By the end of the fourth session I found that I could reach the more focused state of Water Up, Fire Down on my own!!

I would recommend the Reinforcement sessions to anyone who has taken the Initial Awakening workshop. I’ve seen some very good results and I can definitely see how changing my body is actually changing my mind.

The Dahn Center Is My Life Clinic

About two years ago, I was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder, borderline Lupus. And because of this disease I suffer from Pericarditis, anemia, chronic pain in the neck and shoulders, weight loss, hair loss, hives, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Reynaud’s disease, Chronic Bronchitis, a slow moving digestive system, and memory loss.. After my diagnosis I was put on a number of medications, some that were there just to counter-act the side effects of others. I was very weak and limited to excessive physical activity, exposure to sunlight, and with a suppressed immune system, I could not be around anyone who was sick. I was napping about three times a day and could barely function enough to take care of my children. I tried physical therapy, chiropractic care, and regular massage therapy to try to help with the chronic pain. All helped to ease the pain, but never helped it enough to stop reoccurring. When time and money permitted, I, along with my doctor’s permission decided to do weight training. Although, this was supposed to be something that gave me more energy, I was so fatigued after, that I was being unproductive throughout the day. I found myself feeling unsuccessful because as the weight got heavier, arthritis in the arms and knees would kick in and I would say, “I can’t,” even without trying.

It was at this point I knew I needed something to change my state of mind. I was on an exercise program but still did not feel good mentally. I joined Dahn Yoga and found that I was able to be more focused in everything that I do. I was more successful in weight training and was able to gain more strength than I ever thought possible. My energy levels are up and I can go through most days without having to take a nap. I have more patience with my children and feel more at peace with myself and most importantly of all I stopped saying, “I can’t”. Now I am taking Dahn Healer school to heal my self and family as well as to grow my soul. Thank you for changing my life to the light.

Golf and Dahn Yoga

dahn yoga golf

As I have progressed through the various workshops offered by Dahn Yoga,

I began to see a potential benefit from a different perspective than the one I am journeying on.

To bring health, happiness and peace to myself, then to others in my community. As part of the HSP Movement, I envisioned seeing the entire earth living in a totally HSP environment. That’s still my ultimate vision, but now there is also a smaller, more personal goal that has evolved. That personal goal is to make significant improvement in my golf game using the principles, methodologies, and practices of Dahn Yoga. Now, you may ask, how can this be? How can the practice of Dahn Yoga improve the game of golf? Let me respond by identifying five (5) relationships between the game of golf and Dahn Yoga that I relate to.

Relationship #1 is with Meridian exercises.

Through specific meridian exercises, I can improve the physical condition of my body such that the stress of a golf swing will not wear me down as quickly during a round of golf.

Relationship #2 is with Jung Choong breathing. In developing my dahn-jon, I will be developing my ki so it becomes stronger thus enhancing my total being. Feeling my dahn-jon during a golf swing will keep my body, my mind, and my spirit acting as one. I can become my golf swing.

Relationship #3 is with Ji gam and brain education. As an average golfer, remaining focused on my golf ball until I have completed my swing is difficult to attain for each and every swing, approximately 90 – 95 during a round. Without this proper concentration, my mind will be scattered at the time of swing execution causing less than desirable ball direction and distance. Ji gam and other power brain methodologies will help me to remain focused, for at least 30 seconds, through completion of each and every golf swing and to improve my hand – eye coordination. I will also be in the present.

Relationship #4 is with Dahn Mu Do. The objective of Dahn Mu Do is to develop power and find limitlessness in ourselves, our energy and our creativeness. The eleven (11) movements will help to strengthen my lower body so that it can attain a solid “T” structure while keeping the upper body fluid and relaxed. This is the concept of the best way to swing a golf club: a strong lower body and fluid and relaxed upper body.

Relationship #5 is with SMILE. What more can I desire than to play golf with my true self? To be who I really am, to choose to be master of my life, to choose to enjoy what has been given me by the heaven and the earth, and to live it with other earth humans, smiling each step of the way.
With the 2007 golf season upon us, I look forward to playing some golf. I plan on applying the Dahn Yoga principles, practices and methodologies to my golf game and experience what results from this wonderful personal journey. As far as I am concerned, I have created a win-win situation for me.

Relief through Dahn Yoga (LOTS)

Approximately 7 years ago, I was diagnosed with LOTS(Late Onset Tay-Sachs) after being misdiagnosed for many years, and my condition was rapidly degenerating. I had been treated with medications and had tried other “alternative” therapies to no avail. However, I have been practicing Dahn Yoga for the past three years, intensively for the past 18 months, and have made tremendous progress.

Dahn Yoga goes beyond traditional static yoga poses by incorporating tai-chi techniques and other forms of healing martial-art movements. By practicing this form of yoga, I have improved my strength, balance, and my ability to relax and to focus. In fact, when last visiting my neurologist in September 2006, my results were not only better than the last time I had seen him a year prior to that, but were better than they were when I first saw him in December 2002, almost four years prior to that! Specifically, when testing my strength, 7 out of 9 muscles that were measured had shown improvement.

Dahn Yoga is a gentle form of yoga and all postures can be modified to work around any physical limitations that you may have. To find out more information or to locate a center near you, please visit www.dahnyoga.com. You can also contact me directly at verapeso@yahoo.com.

Lyme disease

CAN YOU IMAGINE

healing and energizing your body and mind with your own power?

Shortly after my dad’s passing and the diagnosis of Lyme disease, I was in great need of some serious health changes. I decided it was time to do something different … to heal my body naturally. I had all the aching problemsyou can possibly imagine! (Joints stiffness, insomnia, foggy mind, fatigue, and emotional stress.) I walked to Dahn Yoga center located next to my dry cleaner and asked for some information.

Kim invited me to attend a class and from that day on, I signed up for a year and my health gradually improved. Within a couple of weeks of Dahn YOGA classes, I was able to sleep a full night, to bend my body more without any joints paint and see the positive perspective of all these moments of previous uncertainties. I continued going to the classes three times a week as I truly believed the Dahn Yoga philosophy and principles were working for me. Within months, I felt at my greatest.

My first discovery…All my pains were gone! My body had healed! After 2 years of attending the classes regularly, I signed up for the Shim -Sung. That experience was absolutely powerful and intense…never experienced such a positive energy in my life before! The Shim Sung workshop became even more meaningful a few days later, as I became almost half blind when my retina detached twice. In an emergency, I had no other option, but to undergo an invasive “Buckle” surgery requiring an insert of a silicone form into the eye to hold the retina… AND here is the result from Shim Sung……I underwent the surgery of 4 hours without the general anesthesia prescribed (only numbing the eye)! The doctor was very impressed when he took my pressure and realized how calm I was. Yes, I felt very calm and confident that I could control my mind! My inner power, confidence and strength outweighed all my possible doubts. Shim-Sung training gave me a profound power to hold on to my own mind in a natural way.

Second discovery…my inner power, confidence, strength and self determination were more than I could ever have imagined! My peaceful mind was powerful and it was under my control. Thanks Dahn Yoga!
