First Lady Michelle Obama has been fighting childhood obesity for several years now with her public health campaign Let's Move! She is the latest in a string of presidential wives to recognize the value of good health among kids and adults.
A quick look back through the headlines confirms that more than one First Lady has been concerned with fitness, physical health and personal improvement.
For instance, more than 40 years ago, a September issue of the Spokesman-Review reported that Patricia Nixon, the wife of then-president Richard M. Nixon, tried yoga.
The news source stated that the First Lady gave the holistic mind-body system a whirl at the behest of a group of models and inner-city teenagers, all of whom were part of a volunteer organization dedicating to improving youth well-being.
"I'm sure all of the yoga fans will be after me," Mrs. Nixon said, quoted by the newspaper. She added that she always believed in the healing power of good posture.
Since that time, millions more Americans have flung themselves with energy and enthusiasm into the U.S. yoga community.
