Upgrading Your Brain Operating System

I see the brain as similar, in some ways, to a computer. Granted the brain is far more complex and can be modified through self-directed intention, which is certainly not the case with computers. However, I think it is a useful analogy to think in terms of the brain possessing an operating system.

Every brain, like every computer, has an operating system through which it processes the programs it receives. If you have not been able to create your life as you really want, then perhaps you simply can’t run that program on your current brain operating system. To do so would be like trying to run a current computer program on a version of Windows from the 1980s.

Your operating system is the system of beliefs and preconceptions through which you interact with the world.

Being the A student he was, he sincerely wanted to answer the question. He could not find an answer; he just stared at the ceiling.

“What is the purpose of our life?” I asked.
“Do you know?” he returned.
“I don’t. That’s why I am asking.”
“Let’s stop. There are so many other questions to solve.”
“But everything hangs on the answer to this. It is the first thing to solve,” I said.

Not too much later, my roommate requested to live in another dorm with someone else. It was no wonder, given my obsessive behavior and my brooding nature. Most of my peers avoid¬ed me, my grades suffered, and I had no sense of direction.

Have a good influence

I could not concentrate, and my moods fluctuated wildly. I remember a conversation with my high school roommate, a straight-A student who my parents hoped would have a good influence on me.

He always sat studying at his desk, as soon he got home from school. One day, I sat there staring blankly at the back of his head as he studied.

“What are you doing?” 1 asked.
“Can’t you see?! I’m studying,” he replied.
“Why are you studying?” I asked.
“A quid is coming up. I have to get good grades to get into a good college.”
“Why do you want to go to college?”
“To be successful”
“What arc you going to do after becoming successful?”
“Live happily.”
“What is happiness?”

Finally, he turned around, perplexed by my question.

This is because we are simultaneously Earth’s people and heaven’s people. Our upright stature—with our head in the sky and our feet on the ground— is a symbolic reminder of this.

The true self is the part of you that knows there is more to life than just the surface level of this world. It is the part of you that urges you to choose according to your highest self. However, through life we develop more and more attachment to this physical world, and the voice of the true self becomes muffled. Fortunately, we have been given the struggles and obstacles of life to help us remember who we are.

As a youngster, I was completely vexed by this predicament, but I had no wav to solve it or to understand it.
